Barcelona's Dani Olmo receives short-term registration: Hansi Flick expresses delight as La Liga consider appeal

Barcelona receive short-term permission to register Dani Olmo and Pau Victor ahead of Sunday's Spanish Super Cup final against Real Madrid or Mallorca.

Barcelona's Dani Olmo and Pau Victor have been granted short-term registrations by Spain's Supreme Sports Council (CSD).

Olmo and Victor have been at the centre of a registration saga which has dominated headlines in recent weeks.

The duo, who joined Barcelona on permanent deals last summer, were given temporary registrations until the end of the year courtesy of a rule which allows a club to use up to 80% of an injured player's salary to register an alternative option.

Barcelona failed with two attempts to register the pair via a court order, before they missed the December 31 deadline to prove that they were compliant with La Liga's Financial Fair Play (FFP) regulations.

The Blaugrana eventually met the FFP guidelines on January 3, via the €100m (£83m) sale of VIP boxes at the Camp Nou, which is currently being redeveloped.

Olmo, Victor granted short-term permission to play

However, by that point, Olmo and Victor had already been de-registered, and La Liga subsequently pointed to a rule that states a club cannot register a player on two separate occasions in the same season.

Barcelona ultimately decided to argue against the interpretation of that rule, appealing to the CSD to obtain registrations for both Olmo and Victor.

The CSD have granted the pair permission to play in the short-term until they make a final ruling which could take up to three months.

In a statement, the CSD said: "This measure, which is provisional until the final resolution of the appeal lodged by the club and the aforementioned players, suspends the Agreement of the Monitoring Committee of the RFEF-LaLiga Coordination Agreement and the cancellation of the sporting licences of the aforementioned players,"

"Likewise, it maintains the validity of those licences until this appeal is finally resolved. The CSD considers that the non-adoption of this precautionary measure would cause serious economic and sporting damage to the club and, above all, to the players.

"This could also harm the interests of the Spanish national team, as well as the rest of the national competitions, including La Liga."

Flick "very happy" with Olmo, Victor decision

The ruling failed to arrive in time for Wednesday's Spanish Super semi-final against Athletic Club in Jeddah Saudi Arabia.

In the pair's absence, Gavi and Lamine Yamal found the net to guide Barcelona to a 2-0 victory, keeping their hopes alive of lifting the Super Cup for the 15th time in their history.

Olmo and Victor will be available to feature in Sunday's final against Barcelona's arch-rivals Real Madrid or last season's Copa del Rey runners-up Mallorca.

Speaking after the game, Hansi Flick admitted that he was "really happy" with the decision to grant Olmo and Victor short-term registrations.

"I am really happy for these two guys, but I am also happy for the whole team," Flick told reporters. "After the information, you can see what happens in the bus, it was good. I think the whole club is very happy for this decision, for this right decision.

"[Olmo and Victor] are happy. Not only I'm happy, also they are happy. It was a good signal for us before the match because everyone wants to show also that we are a team, and we win also for them."

La Liga considering Olmo, Victor appeal

While Flick was happy with the news, La Liga released a statement to explain that they would "review the content of the decision" before they decide whether to make an appeal.

La Liga said: "The resolution was adopted without having forwarded the appeal to La Liga or the RFEF, nor granting either party the opportunity to submit their arguments.

"Therefore, La Liga is currently unaware of the reasoning set forth by the players and FC Barcelona in the appeal. La Liga will thoroughly review the content of the decision with a view to filing the appropriate appeals, while also expressing its complete disagreement with the decision."

From Barcelona's perspective, they will be turning their full focus to Sunday's Spanish Super Cup final, where Flick will have the opportunity to win his first trophy in charge of the Blaugrana.
