The 19-year-old impressed during a trial spell with the Buddies and has now been rewarded with a season-long contract.
MacGregor, who was released by Bolton Wanderers in June, spent the second half of last season on loan at Hamilton Academical.
He has represented Scotland at Under-19 level.
