Gareth Southgate optimistic over progression

Gareth Southgate says that he can reinvigorate his England Under-21 side following their 1-0 defeat by Portugal Under-21s.

Gareth Southgate has said that England can recover from last night's 1-0 defeat by Portugal and progress from Group B in the European Under-21 Championships.

Joao Mario scored the only goal of the game as the Young Lions endured a miserable start to their campaign in the Czech Republic.

The result ensured that England's six-year wait for a victory at a major competition goes on, but Southgate is confident that he can still turn it around.

"I don't think there is any disgrace at all in our performance. The lads are disappointed to have lost. I think a draw would have been a fair result," he told Sky Sports News.

"It was a cruel goal to concede that followed a random series of events. I fully believe we can get out of the group."

They face Sweden - who kicked off their tournament with a 2-1 win over Italy - on Sunday.
