England manager Roy Hodgson recalls Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand to the squad for their World Cup qualifiers.

Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand's England career has been revived following manager Roy Hodgson's decision to recall him for their World Cup qualifiers this month.

There had been expectations that the 34-year-old's stint with the Three Lions was over due to a number of snubs from Hodgson, who opted against taking the United centre-back to last year's European Championships.

Despite suggestions that Ferdinand, who hasn't won a cap since June 2011, would never don an England shirt again, he is in the squad to face San Marino and Montenegro.

West Bromwich Albion goalkeeper Ben Foster has also been handed a place in the squad following his decision to come out of international retirement this season.

England squad:

Goalkeepers: Ben Foster, Joe Hart, Fraser Forster.

Defenders: Leighton Baines, Gary Cahill, Ashley Cole, Michael Dawson, Rio Ferdinand , Glen Johnson, Chris Smalling, Kyle Walker.

Midfielders: Michael Carrick, Tom Cleverley, Steven Gerrard, Frank Lampard, Aaron Lennon, James Milner, Leon Osman, Scott Parker, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Theo Walcott, Ashley Young.

Forwards: Jermain Defoe, Wayne Rooney, Daniel Sturridge, Danny Welbeck
