Italy's head coach Cesare Prandelli has been linked with a move to Inter Milan following last month's dismissal of Claudio Ranieri.
Inter president Massimo Moratti has to make a decision on whether to stick with interim coach Andrea Stramaccioni, who has turned the fortunes of the club around, or search for a new leader.
Stramaccioni is expected to keep the post if Inter defeat Lazio and claim Serie A's third spot.
"Well, that's one way to look at it," Moratti said. "It's certainly always good to have targets because there is then a motivation to always do better."
Italian Football Federation president Giancarlo Abete distanced Prandelli from the Nerrazzurri role, however, saying: "It makes no sense talking about this because Prandelli is bound to the national team for four more years."
Prandelli will take charge of Italy at this summer's European championships where they face world champions Spain, Croatia and the Republic of Ireland in the group stage.
