Paul Jewell caught in sexism row

Ipswich Town boss Paul Jewell makes perceived sexist comments towards assistant referee Amy Fearn after suffering defeat at Birmingham.

Ipswich Town manager Paul Jewell has been caught up in a sexism row following remarks made towards assistant referee Amy Fearn.

Jewell directed his anger towards Fearn after she refused to award a penalty to Ipswich during their 2-1 defeat to Birmingham on Wednesday evening.

The former Wigan Athletic manager said: "Everyone thought to a man it was a penalty but not a woman.

"The referee didn't have a good view of it, I thought the lineswoman, or whatever she's called, had a great view and it's a stonewall penalty and a sending off."

In 2006 Fearn was involved in another sexism row after former Luton Town boss Mike Newell said: "She shouldn't be here. That sounds sexist but I am sexist. This is not park football, so what are women doing here?"

Ipswich are now 20th in the Championship table.
