Lewis Hamilton clocks quickest time in first practice for Monaco Grand Prix

Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton tops the standings at the end of practice one of the Monaco Grand Prix, while Max Verstappen finishes close behind.

Lewis Hamilton has topped the timesheet for the first practice session ahead of this weekend's Monaco Grand Prix.

The 30-year-old, who this week signed a new three-year deal with Mercedes, finished with a time of 1:18.750.

That is half a second slower than the time he posted at this stage last year, when he also came out on top in first practice.

Max Verstappen of Toro Rosso sprung a surprise by clocking the second fastest time, finishing just 0.149 off Hamilton in his first ever session on the famous Monaco streets, while Nico Rosberg - winner of this event for the past two years - finished down in ninth.
