Rory McIlroy "confident" ahead of Ryder Cup

Rory McIlroy insists that he is "confident" heading into this weekend's Ryder Cup as Europe look for an unprecedented fourth straight triumph.

Europe's Rory McIlroy has said that he is "confident" with his own form heading into this year's Ryder Cup at Hazeltine.

Europe are bidding for an unprecedented fourth straight triumph in a competition which they have dominated in recent times, winning eight of the last 10 editions.

McIlroy is yet to be on the losing side against the United States, and he is hopeful of maintaining that unbeaten record over the upcoming weekend.

"I think for me it's about being confident in my game, I'm playing pretty well. I don't know how much bearing it will have on the team overall. I'm excited to be here, I've never experienced a loss and that's the goal this weekend as well," he told reporters.

"It's an experience we don't get any other time of the golfing year. It's always different, we're the away team. It will be a different vibe for us but everything that goes on around you when you stand over that ball at the first tee, you have to clear your mind and focus on playing great golf.

"Hopefully I can continue to play the way I have been playing and play quality shots under pressure in the Ryder Cup. My relationship goes back a long way with [captain] Darren Clarke - it's very special for me this week, I think it's very special for both of us. I have always wanted to win for the captain but probably even more so this year because of the relationship I have with Darren."

McIlroy will be competing in his fourth Ryder Cup having made his debut at Celtic Manor in 2010.
