Ryder Cup legend Bernard Gallacher "critically ill"

European Ryder Cup-winning captain Bernard Gallacher is in a "critical condition" at the Aberdeen Royal Infirmary, where he is being treated for his ill health.

Ryder Cup-winning captain Bernard Gallacher is in a "critical" condition in hospital, NHS Grampian has confirmed.

The 64-year-old, who led Europe to victory in the 1995 fixture against the United States at Oak Hill, is being treated in Aberdeen Royal Infirmary, but no other details about his illness are known.

"I understand that he is critical but stable," nephew and professional golfer Steven told reporters. "My family is in disarray at the moment and it is obviously a worrying situation. We are all anxious."

Gallacher had previously captained two losing efforts and also played in eight Ryder Cup matches, becoming the youngest man to represent Great Britain and Ireland in the competition when he debuted in 1969.

Father of Sky Sports News presenter Kirsty, Gallacher was a 10-time winner on the European Tour and was awarded an OBE by the Queen in 1996.
