Rory McIlroy wins WGC-Bridgestone Invitational to return to number one spot

Two weeks after holding off Sergio Garcia to win the Open Championship, Rory McIlroy has won the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational and return to the world number one spot.

Rory McIlroy has returned to the world number one spot after winning the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational just two weeks after victory in the Open Championship.

McIlroy managed to turn a three-shot deficit into a two-shot lead within five holes at Firestone Country Club, before Sergio Garcia fought back to leave the pair tied going into the back nine.

"What I am really proud of this week is following on from the Open with a performance like this," McIlroy is quoted as saying by Sky Sports News.

"I said straight after I did not want any let down, I wanted to keep going and performing until the end of the season.

"It's great to come to one of my favourite tournaments of the year and to perform like this I am pretty satisfied."

With Adam Scott finishing outside the top five, McIlroy became the world's number one player once more, a position he last held in March 2013.
