Webb Simpson misses a putt to halve the match on the last as Ian Poulter and Justin Rose win Europe's first point on day two of the Ryder Cup.

Ian Poulter and Justin Rose have just come through their fourball match against Bubba Watson and Webb Simpson 1 up.

The match began with some irregular scenes on the first tee as Poulter and Watson whipped the crowd up into a frenzy so that chants were being shouted as both men teed off.

Poulter then tickled home a birdie putt on the opener to give Team Europe the early impetus. However, the Americans were ahead after the fifth hole following birdies on three and five.

Holes six, seven and eight were halved before Europe birdied the ninth to ensure they would enter the back nine all square.

Watson and Simpson could only manage a bogey on the tenth and all of a sudden Europe were 1 up and it was soon two as America again bogeyed on 12.

Both pairs struggled on the 16th but it was Watson and Simpson who made bogey, which was one better than their opponents.

The intensity of the match was at an almighty level and Poulter found a cute tee shot on 17 but Rose missed the putt needed to win the match.

That meant the game would go down to the 18th, where Watson put his approach to within 10 feet, but Simpson's putt for the half slipped by to give Europe the point.

The current overall standings are USA 6-4 Europe.
