England's team hotel is believed to be at the centre of a crime-ridden area in Rio de Janeiro.

The Three Lions are expected to stay at the five-star Windsor Atlantica hotel for a friendly against Brazil in June near the Copacabana beach, which has a reputation for gun crime, muggings and robberies.

Supporters have also raised concerns over the area, which could be the base for England in the 2014 World Cup.

"Safety and security are the issues we look at in detail before fans and players travel to a country," the Daily Star quotes Kevin Miles from the Football Supporters Federation as saying.

"The last World Cup in South Africa was held in a country with a high crime rate, and there were dire warnings given to fans beforehand.

"But with a combination of good tournament policing and fans and players listening to advice on where was safe, these views proved unfounded. If they heed the warnings this time, and take the same steps, we hope this will be the case again."

There are thought to have been 30 murders every week in the Copacabana area in 2007.
