Great Britain's Adam Peaty has insisted that his focus was to take gold in the 100m breaststroke final as opposed to smashing his own world record.
The 20-year-old clocked 58.52 seconds in the final, beating South Africa's Cameron van der Burgh and compatriot Ross Murdoch, who claimed bronze.
Peaty, who won four European titles last year, set a world-record time of 57.92s in London in April, but the youngster has claimed that his priority was getting to the top of the podium.
"It's still my first major so I'm new to all this," Peaty told BBC Sport. "I wasn't going for a world record, I was going for gold for Great Britain. I turned and [Van der Burgh] was already gone - I had some catching up to do, but I kept fighting until the end and it paid off."
GB have won three medals so far in Russia.
