Team GB curling head coach Rhona Howie: 'We have to win big matches for medal'

Rhona Howie hopes history repeats itself at the Sochi Games, as Great Britain take on Canada for a place in the Olympic gold medal final.

Great Britain women's curling head coach Rhona Howie is hopeful that history will repeat itself at the Sochi Games.

The 47-year-old, whose side take on Canada later today for a place in the Olympic gold medal final, skippered Team GB to victory against the same opponents at the 2002 Games.

"It's always tough to play Canada in a semi-final," Howie told teamgb.com. "We had to do that and it didn't turn out too bad. Great Britain or Scotland against Canada in curling is always a big game for the players and everyone else involved.

"It's the game that everyone wants to watch. If we want a medal we have to win big matches now, it doesn't matter who the opposition is. It's what the four of you do on the ice that is important. If you can control that, then the results will take care of themselves.

"The next few days, those are the games we need to win. That is what we did in 2002; we came through two playoffs to get to that semi-final and we weren't going to throw it away there. It didn't matter that it was Canada we were playing. For us, we controlled what we could do and just performed and that worked."

Team GB get the semi-final underway at 10am.
