The Chicago Bears have retired the number 89 jersey worn by legendary former player and coach Mike Ditka.

The ceremony took place at half time of the Bears' 45-28 win over the Dallas Cowboys last night, a match that saw two of Ditka's former sides go head-to-head.

The former tight end won an NFL championship for the Bears under legendary coach George Halas in 1963 before later coaching the same team to a Super Bowl in 1985, creating a side widely regarded as one of the greatest in the history of the sport.

The 74-year-old is the only man in modern NFL history to win the championship with the same team as both a player and a coach, while he is also the only person to be involved in the Bears' last two championship-winning teams.

He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1988, becoming the first-ever tight end to be afforded such an honour.
