The Indianapolis Colts have announced that veteran pass rusher Robert Mathis has signed a one-year extension which keeps him at the franchise until 2016.
Mathis has served a four-game suspension for violating the NFL's policy on performance-enhancing drugs, but he is out for the rest of the campaign after tearing his Achilles tendon in a workout.
The 33-year-old led the NFL with 19.5 sacks last season while the Colts have managed just eight in their first four games without him this year.
However, coach Chuck Pagano has insisted that the veteran has acted like an assistant coach during his spell on the sidelines and will be a welcome re-addition to the roster next year.
