Eli Manning inspires New York Giants victory over Washington Redskins

Eli Manning throws two touchdown passes to move up to 12th in the all-time NFL rankings, as his New York Giants side defeat the Washington Redskins 32-21.

Veteran quarterback Eli Manning has moved up to 12th place in the all-time touchdown passing rankings as his New York Giants side defeated the Washington Redskins 32-21 in their second-round NFL clash.

The Giants took an early two-point lead when Rashad Jennings blocked a punt from newly-appointed Redskins kicker Dustin Hopkins.

New York extended their lead with 6:39 remaining in the first quarter, as Andre Williams drove through the Washington defence before reaching the endzone for the game's first touchdown, which was converted by Josh Brown.

With less than a minute remaining of the first quarter Brown was successful with a 35-yard field goal attempt, and the hosts led 12-0.

The Redskins started the second quarter positively, and got onto the scoreboard with a 44-yard field goal from Hopkins, before Brown restored the Giants' 12-point cushion with a 36-yard field goal.

Washington reduced the deficit with 1:43 remaining before half time, as Hopkins succeeded with a 37-yard field goal attempt.

After the break Brown scored the only points of the third quarter, as his 48-yard field goal gave the Giants an 18-6 lead.

The Giants appeared to be coasting to victory in the final quarter as Manning found Odell Beckham Jr for a 30-yard touchdown, which was converted by Brown.

With less than four minutes of the match remaining the game exploded into life, as Redskins quarterback Kirk Cousins found Chris Thompson for their first touchdown of the night. Washington then scored a two-point conversion, as Cousins found wide receiver Jamison Crowder in the endzone.

The Giants moved further ahead with 3:21 remaining, as Manning found Rueben Randle from 14 yards for their third touchdown, which was converted by Brown for a 32-14 lead.

From the very next play, Redskins return specialist Rashad Ross ran 100 yards from the kickoff to score his side's second touchdown of the game. Hopkins converted, and the Giants' lead was cut to 11 points with 3:08 remaining.

The hosts settled the remainder of the quarter down though to see the match through and claim their first win of the season.
