Jim Tomsula has been confirmed as the new head coach of the San Francisco 49ers, replacing Jim Harbaugh.
Harbaugh and the 49ers parted company at the end of the season after a four-year tenure with the franchise, which included a defeat in Super Bowl XLVII and two other appearances in the NFC championship game.
The 49ers' hierarchy decided to look in house after interviewing other candidates as they promoted Tomsula from their defensive line coach to become the 19th head coach in the team's history.
"After conducting a thorough coaching search, and meeting with a number of outstanding candidates, Jim Tomsula clearly is the right man to lead this team," 49ers CEO Jed York told the club's official website.
"Jim is a great teacher and a tremendous mentor who conducts himself with great class and integrity."
49ers general manager Trent Baalke added: "Our organisation is excited to have Jim Tomsula leading this football team. We have had the privilege of working alongside Jim for the past eight seasons.
"He is a proven leader, teacher and mentor, and we look forward to seeing him apply his craft and vision to our team."
Tomsula spent nine years coaching in NFL Europe with the London Monarchs, Scottish Claymores, Berlin Thunder and Rhein Fire before joining the 49ers in 2007.
