San Francisco 49ers head coach Jim Tomsula has praised the work ethic of Jarryd Hayne after the former rugby league player earned a place on the club's roster for the 2015 season.
The 27-year-old quit rugby last year after spending eight years with the Parramatta Eels to attempt a career in the NFL.
Hayne impressed with his performances as a running back and punt returner during pre-season enough to make the 53-man roster for the new season.
Tomsula told reporters: "It's a tremendous achievement, but I think it's also why everybody is so enamoured with it.
"It's that true story, the American way or the Australian way. Work hard, keep driven, and you've made it."
The 49ers open their 2015 season against the Minnesota Vikings on Monday.
