The Washington Redskins have decided to fire head coach Mike Shanahan following a disappointing season, according to reports.
The Redskins were touted as possible Super Bowl candidates before the season, but they lost their first three matches and finished the campaign with an eight-game losing streak to end up with a 3-13 record.
That left them bottom of the NFC East, four wins behind the third-placed New York Giants just a year after winning the division with a 10-6 record.
Shanahan's future came under scrutiny when it became clear that the Redskins were heading for a third losing season in his fourth year in charge, while the speculation was fuelled further by questions over his relationship with team owner Dan Snyder and quarterback Robert Griffin III.
The 61-year-old, who won two Super Bowls with the Denver Broncos, would not give anything away regarding his job security after yesterday's 20-6 loss to the New York Giants, but he did reveal that he is due to meet Snyder this morning.
"I get a chance to talk to Dan tomorrow. After I talk to Dan, I'll talk to you guys. We meet tomorrow morning," Shanahan told reporters on Sunday.
Shanahan has a 24-40 record in charge of the Redskins.
