Jonny Mellor wants to 'prove himself' at Commonwealth Games

Jonny Mellow says that he is looking to 'prove himself' at the Commonwealth Games, and hopes to set a new personal best time.

England's Jonny Mellor has targeted a top-eight finish in Friday's 10,000m at Hampden Park.

The 27-year-old, who is due to arrive in Glasgow tomorrow ahead of the event at the Commonwealth Games, holds a current personal best time of 28.42.20.

"I want to get a top-eight finish and a new personal best," Mellor is quoted as saying by the Liverpool Echo. "I'm racing for the top eight rather than getting too greedy and looking for a top four or five finish. But I just want to prove I can perform at a major championship."

Mellor also revealed his disappointment at the news that Olympic champion Mo Farah would not be taking part in the Games. He added: "Him being there would have added a bit more prestige to the whole event.

"And that is why you train so hard, to race against the top athletes in the world like him. I've raced against Mo a few times and running at the Anniversary Games last year was an amazing and incredible experience."

Mellor is expected to be a part of next month's European Championships squad.
