Conrad Williams: 'We had a point to prove to ourselves'

Team England runner Conrad Williams tells Sports Mole that his 4x400m relay team had a "point to prove to themselves" going into the final of the Commonwealth Games.

Team England runner Conrad Williams has said that the 4x400m relay squad had "a point to prove" to themselves going into the Commonwealth Games final day.

Williams, Michael Bingham, Daniel Awde and Matthew Hudson-Smith raced to the gold medal at Hampden Park this evening, pipping the likes of Bahamas, Trinidad and Tobago and Jamaica to the line.

Having often narrowly missed out on medals in previous meets due to the fierce level of competition involved, Williams is hopeful that their success in Glasgow will help them to make the podium more often in the future.

"To be honest, it's a point to prove to ourselves because we just have to have self belief, which we did and it's proved to us because we've got Europeans next week and it's mainly to try to set up for that as well. We knew we could come out here - we've got four strong teams, these teams are always in front of us. It's frustrating to always be in a row in relays," he told Sports Mole.

"We were fourth behind these teams, so we were just like, 'right, it's the same team'. We just decided that we had to try and show these guys that we can deliver and beat Trinidad and Jamaica and the Bahamas, because these are always the teams, with America thrown in, always denying us the medals. Three of us are going [to the Europeans], so we're making sure Europeans know that when we do turn up, we're there for the medals, we're not just trying to finish fourth anymore because I'm fed up of fourth!

"I've had two and I don't want to do anymore, but these guys, like I said, we all believe in each other. Nigel [Levine] could have come in and he would have done a solid job as well, so we have to make sure we mention Nigel because he got us through to the final. It's not just us four guys."

England's women's 4x400m also had success on the track, picking up a bronze medal in their final.
