Eliud Kipchoge wins London Marathon as Sir Mo Farah breaks British record

Kenya's Eliud Kipchoge triumphs in the hottest London Marathon on record as Great Britain's Mo Farah breaks the British record en route to third place.

Kenya's Eliud Kipchoge has triumphed in the London Marathon as Great Britain's Sir Mo Farah broke the British record en route to third place.

Kipchoge, winner in 2015 and 2016, secured a hat-trick of victories in the British capital, with Ethiopia's Shura Kitata Tola finishing second.

The 2016 Olympic marathon gold medallist was on course for a new world record but slowed in the final stages of a gruelling race in record-high temperatures to finish in two hours, four minutes and 27 seconds.

Farah, meanwhile, kept pace with the leaders for much of the race but finished two minutes and five seconds behind Kipchoge, crossing the line in two hours, six minutes and 32 seconds to beat Steve Jones's 33-year-old British record.

The four-time Olympic champion was competing in his first 26.2 mile race since retiring from the track.
