WBO champion Terry Flanagan has suggested that the easiest all-British showdown to make would be between himself and Derry Mathews.
On Saturday night, Flanagan made the first defence of his world title with a second-round stoppage of Diego Magdaleno, and the Mancunian fighter has revealed that he wants to be involved in a bout with another boxer from Great Britain.
Flanagan has named a number of high-level fighters as potential opponents but the unbeaten puncher feels that a clash with Mathews could be made, with both men being represented by promoter Frank Warren.
The 26-year-old is quoted by World Boxing News as saying: "The people want to know who the best in Britain is, so I want to beat the best over here. All of us could go and become world champion and that shows the level we are all at.
"It's hard to rank who's the best after me. Looking at experience you've got Mathews, Crolla and Mitchell, but then Luke Campbell was a really good amateur and is a top fighter. However, I don't think he is quite ready for me yet, even though he's older.
"Mathews is probably the most likely fight down the line – with both of us promoted by Frank Warren - and I don't see any reason why that couldn't happen."
Mathews currently holds the WBA interim belt.
