Andrew Selby wins historic gold medal

Andrew Selby becomes the first British man to defend his European gold medal, beating Ireland's Michael Conlan on a split decision.

Flyweight Andrew Selby has become the first British fighter to defend his European title, beating Michael Conlan yesterday.

The Welsh amateur, who narrowly missed out on a medal at last summer's Olympics, beat the Irishman on a split decision after a rousing final round.

He was delighted after defending the gold that he won in Moscow two years ago.

"Words can not express how I'm feeling right now," Selby told BBC Sport. "I have had a few fights with Michael Conlan and he is the toughest I have fought.

"It was a split decision and it could have gone either way. I am just glad I have got two gold medals now."

The 24-year-old is the younger brother of British and Commonwealth featherweight champion Lee Selby.
