Australia set target of 231

Australia require 231 runs to win the fourth Ashes Test after dismissing England for 179 in Melbourne.

England have been dismissed for 179 in their second innings of the fourth Ashes Test match to leave Australia requiring 231 runs for victory.

The tourists began their attempts to set Australia a competitive total in solid fashion, with Alastair Cook hitting a positive knock of 51 before Mitchell Johnson struck his pads in front of the stumps.

However, England collapsed to 86-4 after Joe Root and Ian Bell got out cheaply, but Ben Stokes put on a fifth-wicket partnership of 44 with Kevin Pietersen before being dismissed by Nathan Lyon.

Jonny Bairstow and Pietersen put on another 43, but after Bairstow fell, England quickly lost their remaining four wickets for six runs, with Pietersen holing out to Ryan Harris for 49.
