The day belonged to England as they ripped through India's top order this morning to eventually dismiss their opponents for 152 before tea.
Robson was the first to go in England's reply when Bhuvneshwar Kumar bowled him out for just six from 24 deliveries, while Cook, who recently scored two half-centuries in the series after questions over his captaincy, fell shortly after reaching double figures.
The Essex cricketer top-edged straight to Pankaj Singh at long leg after playing a loose hook shot from Varun Aaron's delivery to head back to the pavilion on 17.
Ballance and Ian Bell were able to steady the hosts innings by finishing the session unscathed and reaching a combined 82 runs before Ballance was sent packing for 37 by Aaron.
Bell (45 not out) and Chris Jordan will resume England's innings tomorrow for day two.
