England started day three of the second Test with the intention of posting a big first innings lead to set up victory.
The tourists dominated the morning session, with both Alastair Cook (122) and Kevin Pietersen (186) reaching three figures in a partnership worth 206 for the third wicket.
However, the latter's dismissal sparked a collapse and England were bowled out for 413, a first innings lead of 87.
India struggled against the spin of Monty Panesar (5-61) and Graeme Swann (2-39) in reply, closing the day on 117-7 thanks largely to a defiant 53 not out from Gautam Gambhir.
Read below to see how a remarkable day of cricket unfolded in Mumbai.
Good morning everyone. Well, would it be OK to ask for another day's play like we had yesterday? Brilliant batting ensured that England have started to take control of this game but there is a long way to go and India will surely hit back with their three spinners today.
Predictably, it was Cook who led the charge for England yesterday with another brilliant innings that looks destined to end with a century. Kevin Pietersen punished the Indian spinners for their lack of consistency and his presence at the crease will be a major problem for MS Dhoni's side.
If Cook or Pietersen reach three figures today, they will equal the England record of 22 centuries held by Geoffrey Boycott, Wally Hammond and Colin Cowdrey
Dhoni is out on the pitch giving his players one last team talk. How much will it spin today? England need a lead because they know how difficult it will be to bat last on this pitch.
Ojha will bowl the first over of the day, here we go then!
Pietersen will be happy with his start against Ojha as he proceeds to defend well against the left-arm spinner before missing a wide on that gets a lot of bounce. Maiden over.
Ashwin begins with the ball from the other end and Cook picks up two runs before clipping the ball into the air on the off-side to move to 90. Poor ball from Ashwin as he drags one halfway down, allowing Pietersen to sweep the ball easily to the fine leg boundary. Big gap at cover allows Pietersen to jog two runs following a cut shot. Sloppy over, 10 runs scored.
Sice of luck at the start of Ojha's over as Pietersen edges one wide of gully for a couple. Good call from Cook allows these two to sneak a single and they are gifted an extra run when Ashwin's throw is wayward. Four runs from the over.
Remember Pujara's painful blow at short leg yesterday? Well, the run-machine is still off the field with that injury and the eccentric Rahane continues in his place. Better over from Ashwin, with just a single for Cook being scored.
Cook gets off strike at the start of the over as he moves closer to three figures. Ojha is definitely finding some bounce this morning and he's trying to cramp Pietersen for room on the crease. Good cricket.
Too short from Ashwin again and Cook collects two runs to deep cover. Good response from the spinner but Cook is confident enough to leave just outside off-stump.
Pietersen is winning his battle against left-arm spin so far and he has four runs in Ojha's over with a brilliant chip straight over the bowler's head. 200 up for England.
Ashwin is excited when he hits Cook on the pads but the ball looks to be sliding down leg side and Tony Hill shakes his head. The England duo trade singles but it's a much better over from Ashwin.
Runs for Pietersen as he latches onto a short ball to smash the ball to the cover boundary at the start of Ojha's over. India look a bit sloppy so far this morning and there seems to be very little urgency. Eight more runs to the England total and Cook is on 98.
Cook moves one step close to another landmark with a nudge to mid-wicket for a single before Pietersen adds two more to his score with a scoop over fine leg. Half a chance for India but Pietersen gets enough on his upward drive to reach the cover boundary. Two more at the end of the over means Pietersen joins Cook in the nineties and that is the 150 partnership.
Century for Cook: First bowling change of the morning as Harbhajan replaces Ashwin but Cook hits four from the first ball to reach three figures once again. That boundary means Cook equals the record for most Test centuries in an England shirt. He's one of the best players in the world right now but the skipper will not be done yet. Fantastic innings once again from Cook. Pietersen goes to 95 later in the over with a sweep over fine leg for four runs. Good start this morning from England.
Singles on offer for both batsman at the beginning of a new over from Ojha. Cook then uses the spin well to rotate the strike once more with a nudge to square leg. One more to Pietersen and it's four from the over.
Century for Pietersen: It's Pietersen's turn to join Cook on the list of most centuries scored for England. Questions about his state of mind before this game but a reverse sweep to reach three figures suggests his confidence is probably back to normal. He points his bat to the dressing room. Make no mistake about it, that's an important innings for everyone involved with England. Six runs from Harbhajan's over.
England looking so comfortable so far this morning and not even a sharp turning delivery from Ojha can fool Cook. Boundary for the skipper later on as he uses his feet well to crack one through extra cover.
Pietersen and Cook once again trade singles in the early part of the over and these two will be eyeing a big first innings lead now. Three from Harbhajan's over.
The new ball is available for India as we have a brief stoppage five minutes before the drinks break, for some unknown reason. Pietersen sweeps for a single to fine leg before Cook cuts to point for one run. Brilliant from Pietersen as he stands tall to lofts the ball straight over Ashwin's head for six runs. India need some fresh ideas, this is all a bit too easy for England. Time for drinks.
This pair are just milking the singles and they take two runs from Harbhajan's over following the break.
Cook rocks back to cut a single behind point before Pietersen hands the strike back with a push to long-on. Two more singles follow, it's beginning to look like a bit of a net session for these two.
Dhoni decides to give Yuvraj a bowl, presumably to try and tempt Pietersen into a false shot. No such luck as Pietersen waits for his chance to take a single and that's the only blemish to the over.
This is now the record 3rd wicket partnership at the Wankhede Stadium. Ashwin is back into the attack but he can't stem the flow of singles either. Three singles from the over. Pietersen has now gone past Cook in the scoring stakes. He has 119 and his skipper has 118.
Pietersen stretches for one well outside off-stump and unsurprisingly he can't get the right contact on the ball. A couple of runs to deep cover brings up the 200 partnership and what a crucial combination this has been.
Once again, Pietersen starts Ashwin's over with a single. Cook adds four runs with a perfectly timed cover drive. Immaculate technique from the England skipper.
Wicket! Cook (122) c Dhoni b Ashwin
Well, that didn't look like it would ever come for India. Ashwin gets one to do just enough off the pitch to catch Cook's edge with Dhoni taking a routine catch behind the stumps. It's another superb innings from Cook and Pietersen makes a point of congratulating his captain. Jonny Bairstow is the new batsman for England.
You can see the relief on the faces of the Indian players. Big wicket and that's encouraged Dhoni to take the new ball. Zaheer comes into the attack.
Zaheer starts loosely with a half-volley outside off-stump that Pietersen easily helps to the fine leg boundary. Quick single taken with a push to point and Bairstow, sporting a magnificent moustache, is happy to defend his first three balls.
Ashwin continues his spell but this time it's with the new ball. There's just a single from an average over. India need another wicket before lunch.
Zaheer finds a better line in the over but Pietersen uses his feet well to collect a single at mid-wicket to ruin a maiden.
Fans update: There is an Indian supporter in the stands wearing the mask from the horror movie Scream. Why? No idea!
Ojha begins a new spell and Pietersen nudges the ball down the ground for one before Bairstow gets off the mark with a hurried single to mid-wicket. The former then chips the ball to long-off but it's well short of Ashwin.
These two are very quick and they rush a single when Pietersen prods the ball to mid-on. Good tactic from Zaheer as he fires in a short ball but Bairstow does enough to top edge the ball over Dhoni to earn four runs.
Ashwin is back following that short spell for Ojha and Pietersen, predictably, begins the over with a single. Brilliant timing shown by Bairstow to beat the man at mid-off and pick up four runs.
Yuvraj returns for a new spell before lunch but he starts with a wide delivery that Pietersen smashes to the point boundary for four. Maybe one, possibly two overs before lunch.
Plenty of changes from Dhoni in the last 30 minutes as Ojha comes back into the attack again. Ojha finds some big bounce to beat Bairstow's edge.
Wicket! Bairstow (9) c Gambhir b Ojha
Ojha delivers another threatening delivery and Bairstow, playing against the spin, sends a leading edge straight to Gambhir at silly point. It's a very good catch and the umpires have called for an early wicket.
Lunch: What a time to take a wicket for India. The dismissal of Cook was vital but the England skipper has already made his mark on this match. Bairstow will be disappointed with his shot but India go to lunch on a high. However, Pietersen looks in top form and England remain in control, for now.
We'll take a quick break during the lunch break but make sure to stick with Sports Mole for the second session, beginning at around 6.35am.
Welcome back everyone. There's a few suggestions floating about that Bairstow's shot may have hit Gambhir's helmet before it was caught. If that was the case, he shouldn't have been given out. I haven't seen a replay as yet though.
Pietersen is they key for England. He's been superb so far and he has the ability to take pile misery on the hosts. India have returned to the field and they are closely followed by Pietersen and the new batsman, Samit Patel.
Oh dear! Bairstow should not have been out before lunch. The replay clearly shows the ball hitting Gambhir's helmet and in truth, that's a poor mistake from the umpires.
Ojha finishes the over he started before lunch but he doesn't threaten Patel. Wicket maiden.
It's Zaheer who begins the session with the ball from the other end. A wide ball from the seamer is signalled by the umpire before Pietersen adds a single with a push into the off-side to bring up the 300.
It looks as though the Indian team may have discussed recalling Bairstow and the umpires did have a word with the hosts but nothing came of it.
Great shot from Pietersen as he drags one from outside off-stump to earn four runs over mid-wicket. Play and a miss next ball as Ojha responds well with a high-bouncing delivery.
Zaheer feels like the short ball is a good tactic to Patel and after sending the first one in too high, the 34-year-old then sees the Notts all-rounder send the next one into the stands at fine leg for six runs. Another boundary for Patel as he opens the bat to guide the ball to the rope at third man.
According to reports, the umpire requested Dhoni to reconsider Bairstow's dismissal but the Indian team decided against recalling the England batsman, which is slightly disappointing but it's the umpires who made the mistake. Back on the field, it's a great over from Ojha as he causes Pietersen more than one problem with bounce outside off-stump.
There's not too much movement around for Zaheer during this spell. Patel looks to still be playing himself in despite those earlier two boundaries. Just a single from the over.
Tendulkar can't do enough deep on the off-side to prevent Pietersen from collecting four runs with a powerful cut. England's number four moves past 150 in superb fashion, slog-sweeping Ojha for six over mid-wicket. Great shot, even better innings. Scores are level.
Gambhir does very well at mid-off to prevent Pietersen finding the boundary again but that singles sees England move into the lead. Just the one run from Zaheer's over.
Reverse sweep from Pietersen at the start of Ojha's over but Sehwag manages to block the ball at slip. Poor ball later in the over allows Patel to rock back and punch the ball through mid-wicket for four runs. Good response though and Patel is lucky not to edge one that turns and bounces.
Ashwin is back into the attack to replace Zaheer and Pietersen is immediately off strike with an easy single. Patel gives the strike back to his partner with a nudge through mid-wicket and there's just two runs from the over.
Signs of more spin from this pitch now. Ojha almost catches Patel's edge and that brings some words of encouragement from Pietersen. Maiden over.
Pietersen is off strike with a leg-bye and Patel adds a couple of runs with a flick to fine leg.
Ojha loops one outside off-stump and Pietersen brutally smashes the ball over extra cover for a big six. You won't see many better innings than what we're being treated to from Pietersen today. Ojha does beat the bat with a beauty later in the over but he concedes eight runs.
Patel works the ball nicely through the close fielders to pick up a single on the leg-side. Pietersen drops to his knee to scoop the ball to square leg and bring up the fifty partnership. The field comes in for Patel but the Notts ace gets enough on a drive to beat Rahane at extra cover, collecting four runs in the process. Frustration for Ashwin when Patel then tickles the ball very fine for another boundary.
Pietersen gives the strike to Patel and he's beaten by an unbelievable delivery that somehow doesn't catch the outside edge.
Wicket! Patel (26) c Kohli b Ojha
Ojha does find the edge this time with one that turns and bounces. Kohli takes a smart catch at gully and Ojha has his fourth wicket. Matt Prior in next, time for a bit of excitement from this pair?
Plenty of spin on this pitch now as Prior is beaten completely by Ojha. England's new batsman survives the over.
Ashwin looks encouraged by the spin Ojha has found and he almost causes Prior a problem down the leg-side. Not easy too start against turn like this. Engaging cricket in Mumbai, just a single from the over.
Pietersen certainly thinks it's time for some entertainment. There's two men in the deep on the leg-side but Pietersen decides to launch the ball over their heads for six runs. Good response from Ojha and India want lbw but Pietersen gets just outside the line of off-stump. Four more runs to his name when he paddle sweeps the ball fine to the frustration of Dhoni and his fielders. 11 come from the over and it's time for a drinks break.
Great fielding from Ojha at fine leg to prevent Pietersen from picking up a boundary with another sweep after the break in play. A reverse sweep brings the same batsman two more runs before he gets off strike with a push to mid-off. Prior gets off the mark in brilliant fashion with the straightest of drives to the boundary rope and he adds two more with a lofted shot to mid-wicket. Ashwin concedes 12 runs in the over.
Prior's turn to play the sweep shot and he earns a single to fine leg.
Wicket! Pietersen (186) c Dhoni b Ojha
Ojha finally gets his man as Pietersen edges one to Dhoni while attempting to find the boundary rope again on the off-side. Astonishing innings from Pietersen and the Mumbai crowd applaud him as he walks back to the dressing room. Ojha has five wickets and India are into the bowlers now.
Ojha wants lbw first ball against Broad but he's just outside the line of off-stump when the ball strikes his pad. A leg-bye means Broad keeps the strike but it's a big over for India.
I don't think Swann and Panesar will mind what they're seeing. Ashwin beats Broad's edge twice, with the second delivery evading Dhoni and racing away for four byes. Good running as Broad sneaks a single to short mid-wicket. Six from the over.
Great shot from Prior as he rocks back to cut Ojha behind point for four runs. A single brings Broad on strike and he then sweeps for one run to square leg.
Good over from Ashwin but Broad does well to get behind the line and block the ball before almost offering a chance to Sehwag at slip. It's a maiden.
Harbhajan begins a new spell and finds some big turn immediately. Prior attempts the reverse sweep but he doesn't make contact and has to be careful not to leave his crease. A more conventional sweep shot does bring Prior four runs behind fine leg later in the over before pushing a single to cover to keep the strike and bring up 400.
Ashwin begins his 40th over but these two rotate the strike well to earn five more runs for the total.
Harbhajan continues and he's beginning to cause a few problems. Huge bounce later in the over and it catches Prior's glove but no chance Dhoni is taking that behind the stumps.
Easy single on offer to long-off for Broad at the start of Ashwin's over. Broad is struck on the pads but the bounce means there's no chance of lbw.
Wicket! Prior(21) run out Dhoni
Prior attempts a quick single and despite Broad initially responding, England's wicketkeeper is sent back and can't make his ground with Dhoni throwing accurately to Kohli at the stumps. Soft dismissal.
Graeme Swann is the new batsman but he's not really troubled in the over.
Wicket! Broad (6) c Pujara b Harbhajan
Broad prods forward to a Harbhajan delivery and he is superbly caught by Pujara at silly point. It's off the face of the bat which makes that piece of fielding even better. Anderson in next, England beginning to collapse a little.
Anderson edges his first ball through a gap for a couple of runs. Clever from Harbhajan as he sends one down a bit wider encouraging a wild swing from Anderson.
Wicket! Anderson (2) lbw b Harbhajan
Harbhajan gets one to turn enough to beat Anderson's edge and hit him on the back pad. It's quite high but it would have probably clipped the bails.
Ashwin begins a new over by taking a single to bring Panesar on strike. Is this a different person from three years ago? Panesar drops to one knee and slog sweeps Ashwin over mid-wicket for four runs.
Wicket! Panesar (4) c Zaheer b Ashwin
Dhoni sends another man out in the deep but that doesn't discourage Panesar, who proceeds to slog sweep straight at Zaheer. England's innings comes to an end very quickly but they do hold a crucial lead of 86.
England were 382-5 so 413 all out is a bit disappointing but fair play to India, they responded well after breaking the Cook/Pietersen partnership.
England need to bowl well early and if they can get a couple of wickets before India get a good start, then the hosts will begin to panic. There's certainly signs that the pitch is beginning to spin more.
An early Tea has been taken at the Wankhede. India will begin their reply after the break, trailing by 86. Crucial session once again coming up.
If England expose the middle order in the next session, they can pat themselves on the back in the hotel tonight. They can;t allow Sehwag to reduce the deficit quickly because batting last on this pitch will be very, very difficult.
The England players are back out on the pitch and Cook has given his team the final words before the innings begins. Gambhir and Sehwag will open the batting and it looks like Anderson will get the ball first.
Anderson doing a good job of keeping the ball full outside off-stump but Gambhir refuses to be forced into playing a false shot. Maiden over to begin the innings.
Panesar will open the bowling from the other end. Big test to start with for Sehwag.
Decent first two balls from Panesar but there is a single on the off-side for Sehwag. Good footwork from Gambhir to rock back and push two to deep cover and there's another single with a nudge to square leg.
Slice of luck for Gambhir when he almost chops one onto his stumps at the start of a new Anderson over. Good bouncer from Anderson brings a wild hook shot from Gambhir but there's no edge. A pull shot later in the over does bring Gambhir four runs to square leg.
Panesar begins a new over and finds a leading edge from Sehwag but there's no close fielders on the off-side so Sehwag survives. An inside edge from Gambhir deflects off his pad to bring him a single but Panesar should not be discouraged because he is looking threatening. Four runs from the over.
Singles are coming too easily for India at the moment as Gambhir nudges the ball onto the leg-side to get off strike. Full, swinging delivery from Anderson but it's a leg bye to fine leg. Three from the over.
Very short from Panesar but Gambhir's pull strikes Bairstow and India can only rush a single. Oh, so close! Leading edge from Sehwag but the ball drops agonisingly short of Compton on the leg-side. Four singles from the over. Swann may get an early bowl soon.
Anderson does continue his spell but he's not finding any swing yet. Sehwag is struck on the pads but that's too high and the ball is probably going past leg-stump too. Anderson is too full later in the over and Gambhir drives well but Compton prevents a boundary with some great fielding in the deep.
Panesar has struggled to find the right length against Gambhir and the left-hander has three runs with a cut backward of point. Poor from Panesar as he sends down a half-tracker, allowing Sehwag to free his arms and earn four to point.
Wicket! Sehwag(9) c Swann b Panesar
Big wicket for England! Panesar gets one to leave Sehwag and catch the outside edge on its way to Swann, who takes a good catch at gully. Pujara is the new batsman.
Good move from Cook as he brings Swann into the attack immediately after the first wicket falls.
Great start from Swann but it's unclear if he caught Gambhir's edge, however, Bairstow fails to take the catch at short leg. Runs are given so it would have been out but Bairstow had no chance really. Pujara is gifted with a full toss from Swann and the in-form batsman thanks him by whipping the ball to the mid-wicket boundary. An inside edge brings the right-hander a couple more runs to fine leg.
Wicket! Pujara (6) c Bairstow b Swann
Pujara goes, what a big moment in the match! The run-machine lunges forward but he can only inside edge the ball to Bairstow, who takes a quite superb catch at short leg. Someone called Tendulkar is in next. Is he any good?
Good ball to start with from Swann but Tendulkar survives. Fascinating cricket in Mumbai.
Panesar begins a new over and Gambhir immediately gives the strike to Tendulkar. The little master thinks about playing the paddle sweep but the spin beats his edge. Panesar beats the edge again and Prior whips the bails off and he thinks he has his man. The decision is going upstairs... he's safe! It's very, very close though and Prior deserves credit for that piece of keeping.
Things look like they're beginning to go England's way. Swann gets six balls at Gambhir and the left-hander just isn't sure what to do at the crease. Couple of close calls and it's a maiden.
Tendulkar relieves some pressure with a perfect straight drive for four runs at the start of Panesar's over. England's spinner then drops one too short and that's food and drink for Tendulkar as he clips the ball to the fine leg boundary. Big bounce beats Tendulkar's edge but it's a good over for India.
Gambhir looks intent on playing Swann off the back foot and it's working, so far. It's a maiden over.
Any other player but Tendulkar would be struggling even more against Panesar here. The veteran is leaving the ball well and when he does play, it's with soft hands. Maiden over and it's time for a drinks break.
Swann continues after the break and Gambhir immediately picks up four runs with an inside edge that runs very fine to the boundary rope. England think they have Gambhir with an lbw shout but it may have been sliding down and Tony Hill shakes his head. Big turn outside off-stump means the ball evades Prior and India have two byes.
Wicket! Tendulkar (8) lbw b Panesar
India are in big trouble now! Panesar's delivery is full and Tendulkar gets trapped on the crease. He's struck on the back pad and it's an easy decision for Aleem Dar. Virat Kohli in next.
If Kohli didn't know how difficult batting is in the session, he does now. Panesar beats the new batsman's outside edge with a beauty and it's a wicket maiden.
Swann is still making Gambhir uncomfortable at the crease but the left-hander does find a single to get off strike. Kohli drives the ball down the ground and the ball is stopped by Pietersen. Three runs from the over.
Panesar almost has another when Gambhir prods one onto the leg-side but the ball drops just short of Bairstow. A flick to fine leg brings him a single but that's the only blemish to a very good Panesar over.
Gambhir does well to defend a full delivery from Swann at the tart of a new over. England are doing well to prevent the singles in the last few overs and Compton puts in a very good dive to stop a Gambhir cut shot. Maiden over.
Panesar starts the over with a full toss and Kohli puts away a much needed boundary to mid-wicket. The right-hander is confident enough to leave a ball outside off-stump and that surprises Prior, who can't prevent four byes. Big lbw shout from England but Kohli gets a small inside edge on the ball before it strikes his pads. Good over for India, nine runs scored.
Wicket! Kohli (7) c Root b Swann
Oh dear! Swann will have never taken a wicket with such a bad ball. England's spinner sends down a juicy full toss and Kohli looks all set to smash the ball out of the ground but he miscues his shot straight to substitute Joe Root at mid-off. Remarkable dismissal. Yuvraj is in now and he's on a pair.
Yuvraj avoids a pair by nudging the ball to square leg for a single from his second ball. Beauty from Swann to beat Gambhir on his outside edge but at least the opener is battling hard. England can sense victory from here.
There's a cheeky smile on the face of Panesar when he takes a return catch off Yuvraj's pads. Sarcastic appeals, you would hope. Cook puts himself at silly point but Yuvraj earns two backward of point with a well placed cut shot. Four more to India's number six with a paddle sweep to fine leg.
Swann begins a new over and Gambhir is immediately off strike with a clip onto the leg-side before Yuvraj takes a single to deep cover. Good shot from Gambhir as he picks the length well to crack the ball past Compton at point for four runs. The over finishes with a big turning delivery and it does too much to take Gambhir's edge.
Wicket! Yuvraj (8) c Bairstow b Panesar
What a match Panesar is having! The returning spinner gets enough bounce to find Yuvraj's glove and Bairstow takes another catch at short leg. It's time for Dhoni but his side still trail by 8 runs.
Dhoni is off the mark with a push to mid-off, can't work out why he was allowed to do that at the start of his innings. England think they have Gambhir caught at short leg but despite some very loud appeals, Aleem Dar shakes his head. It struck the left-hander's thigh pad and Cook is told to calm his players down.
Mistake from Compton at point allows Gambhir to sneak a single and bring Dhoni on strike. India cannot afford to lose another wicket before the close of play but it seems there's a close call every delivery. Three runs from the over.
Dhoni nudges a Panesar delivery onto the leg-side to earn a single. Gambhir deserves credit for the way he's applied himself in this session and he has three runs with a push to deep cover. The scores are level until Dhoni hurries a single to give India the lead.
Swann continues and the Indian pair to rush a couple of singles at the beginning of the over.
Runs for Gambhir as he drives Panesar through the vacant cover region for three at the start of a new over.
Wicket! Dhoni (6) c Trott b Panesar
It's the captain's turn to walk back to the dressing room! Panesar brings Dhoni onto the front foot and finds the outside edge with Trott taking the catch at slip.
Ashwin takes a couple of steps down the pitch first ball and almost prods the ball straight to Bairstow at silly point. Two runs and a big wicket from the over.
Big lbw appeal! Strange leave from Gambhir but Swann turns it too much and the ball probably would have just missed off-stump. Superb over from Swann and he beats Gambhir again with a beauty that is just too good for the left-hander.
Remember, Ashwin is a good batsman. He takes three from Panesar with a clip onto the leg-side at the start of the over. Great shot from Gambhir, who walks down the pitch to drive the ball through extra cover for four to bring up 100 for India. Gambhir is on 45 now, seven from the over.
Swann begins a new over. Ashwin is eager to use his feet to come and meet the ball but that could be a risky game. Shut my mouth Mr Ashwin! The number eight storms down the track and launches the ball straight down the ground for a big six.
Better from India as they take three singles from Panesar's first three balls.
Wicket! Ashwin (11) c Patel b Panesar
Ashwin plays the lottery again with another big shot but he doesn't make great contact with the ball and Patel composes himself to take the catch on the off-side. Panesar has his fifth wicket of the innings and his tenth wicket of the match. Superb Monty!
Harbhajan almost finds short leg at the start of Swann's over but he gets a single instead. Fifty for Gambhir when the opener rocks back to cut the ball through the off-side for four runs. That innings may be forgotten but he deserves credit for a very determined knock. Swann wants lbw against Gambhir but that's clearly going past leg-stump. These two survive and that's the close of play.
Close of play: What a session for England. The brilliance of Panesar and Swann have put the tourists on the brink of victory. India lead by 31 heading into day four and are in big trouble. The job isn't done though and England must play with the same intensity tomorrow morning.
Every year we are told 'Test cricket is dying' but this match is certainly proving otherwise. A fabulous day of cricket comes to an end in Mumbai but make sure you return to Sports Mole tomorrow for more drama. Thanks for joining me today, goodbye.
