Former New Zealand captain Brendon McCullum is appointed as the new coach of the England Test squad on a four-year contract.

Brendon McCullum has been confirmed as the new England Test coach on a long-term contract.

The ECB have taken their time in overseeing a reshuffle on the back of the recent Ashes defeat, the likes of Andrew Strauss and Paul Collingwood having been installed in temporary roles for the duration of the tour of the West Indies.

However, after Ben Stokes and Rob Key were named as captain and managing director respectively, it was left for a permanent successor to Chris Silverwood to be selected, leading to the appointment of McCullum.

Speaking after taking the position, the New Zealand legend said: "In taking this role on, I am acutely aware of the significant challenges the team faces at present, and I strongly believe in my ability to help the team emerge as a stronger force once we've confronted them head-on.

"I've enjoyed several robust conversations with Rob Key about the direction of travel for the team and have found his enthusiasm contagious. I'm no stranger to bringing about change within a team environment, and I can't wait to get started."

McCullum, who is close to finishing his stint with IPL side Kolkata Knight Riders, will be in charge for the upcoming series with his home nation, the squad for the first game with the Black Caps being named next week.
