An exciting day continued at Eden Park when New Zealand, who resumed on 78-7, lost two wickets in the first over after tea as Ishant Sharma (3-28) removed both BJ Watling (11) and Ish Sodhi (0).
Trent Boult (7*) and Neil Wagner (14) took the lead past 400 for the Black Caps before the latter became Sharma's third victim of the innings, which ended with New Zealand collapsing to 105 all out.
India, chasing a target of 407 to win the Test match, lost their first wicket in the eighth over when Tim Southee had Murali Vijay (13) caught down the leg-side by Watling.
Shikhar Dhawan played in trademark fluent fashion for his 49 not out and he was well supported by Cheteshwar Pujara (22*) as India made it to the close of play without losing any more wickets.
