Pakistan started day two of the first Test against South Africa in high spirits after dismissing the hosts for 253 on Friday.

However, Dale Steyn (6-8) spearheaded the attack perfectly to bowl Pakistan out for 49, their lowest ever Test total.

The Proteas piled on the misery in their second innings, reaching 207-3 at stumps to lead by 411 runs in Johannesburg.

Update: Good morning everyone, there have been some gremlins in our system this morning, causing problems for yours truly. However, what I can tell you is that Mohammad Hafeez has been caught behind the stumps to give the hosts their first wicket of the day. South Africa have started impressively and Pakistan are currently 12-1 after five overs in their innings.

WICKET! Jamshed (2) lbw b Steyn

Jamshed stays back to a swinging delivery from Steyn and is hit on the pads. Billy Bowden raises his finger and a review confirms the original decision. Steyn has two wickets and Pakistan look to be struggling this morning.

Younus Khan is the new batsman and he has a very important role to play following those two wickets. Steyn seems to be swinging the ball with every delivery.

WICKET! Khan (0) c Smith b Steyn

Steyn is on the rampage! Khan reaches for the ball outside off stump but can only find Smith at first slip. The Proteas are jubilant but Pakistan are in big trouble now. Misbah-Ul-Haq is in next.

Philander has bowled beautifully for no reward so far this morning. It's maiden over from the seamer and Pakistan are just about hanging in there at the moment.

Steyn continues his spell, with Misbah happy to defend any delivery for now. Good defence shown from the number four as South Africa's leading bowler completes another maiden.

Philander has an lbw appeal rejected at the beginning of a new over and despite a questioning look, Smith decides against reviewing. Azhar is completely bamboozled by a beauty later on but he does survive and Pakistan continue to trudge on following another maiden.

Misbah seems to be adopting the correct strategy by playing late against Steyn. The skipper flirts with the ball outside off stump but there's no edge and he remains, for now.

Morkel comes on for his first bowl of the day and immediately has Azhar flinching at the crease. De Villiers appeals for a catch down leg-side but a replay proves the original not out decision was correct. It's another maiden over, and Pakistan need a big partnership.

Misbah is made for situations like this and he has a huge role to play as skipper today. The tourists are content on blocking but a leg-side offers the skipper a chance to earn four runs to fine-leg.

Azhar gets off strike by prodding Morkel's first delivery to fine-leg for a single. A sharp bouncer crashes into Misbah's arm but the ball bounces over gully before racing to the boundary rope. The Pakistan skipper is treated for a few moments while the South African players take drinks. Morel returns with a wide and it's six from the over.

Kallis is given his first bowl of the day and it's a decent start for the experienced all-rounder. A single is the only reward for Pakistan and the pressure continues to build.

There's a slight mix-up between the Pakistan duo midway through Morkel's over but the throw is at the wrong end and Misbah makes his ground. One more run follows and the tourists are beginning to settle.

Shot of the day so far as Azhar leans on a full delivery from Kallis to collect four runs through extra cover. The number three is back to stubborn defence after the textbook drive and he blocks out the remainder of the over.

Misbah is struck in the stomach by a fierce delivery from Morkel and his concentration seems to leave him as he swings wildly at a ball outside off stump. Superb over from Morkel and it's a maiden.

Kallis withdraws an lbw appeal, realising the ball was probably going over the stumps. Pakistan are playing much better now but the South African threat has not gone away yet.

Misbah edges one just short of Kallis before hanging his bat to a wider short ball. The skipper survives and then fends off a superb bouncer from Morkel. A wild delivery from the bowler allows Misbah to free his arms and earn four runs through point.

South Africa are beginning to stray from the line that has served them so well this morning. A short ball from Kallis is sent to the boundary following an unorthodox pull shot from Azhar.

WICKET! Azhar (13) c De Villiers b Kallis

Brilliant bowling from Kallis as he fires in yet another bouncer, catching Azhar's glove and allowing De Villiers to take an easy catch.

Morkel is getting the ball to go both ways but Misbah is stubborn in his approach and knows how important his wicket is now. It's one from the over and the pressure is right back on the tourists.

WICKET! Misbah (12) c De Villiers b Kallis

Kallis begins another over and De Villiers is excited when he takes a catch behind the stumps. Smith decides to review the not out decision and hot spot shows the slightest of edges, prompting Misbah's departure.

The Pakistan duo trade singles at the end of the over but the wickets have put a further dent in the hopes of the tourists.

WICKET! Shafiq (1) c De Villiers b Philander

Philander strikes on the first ball of a new spell as Shafiq plays a hopeless drive outside off stump to gift De Villiers another catch.

WICKET! Gul (0) c Smith b Philander

Brilliant over from Philander and his stock keeps rising in Test cricket. Two wickets, no runs from six balls.

Kallis races through his over and it's yet another maiden. Pakistan require 15 more runs to avoid the follow-on.

Ajmal is looking far from relaxed against Philander's bowling but he does snatch a rare run with a push onto the off-side. That's lunch. What a session for the Proteas!

The players go to the dressing room and there are no prizes for guessing who's the happier. Pakistan still need 14 to avoid the follow-on. We'll take a quick break but come back in around 30 minutes as we begin coverage of the afternoon session.

Welcome back, did anyone see that session coming? Seven wickets mean South Africa are in charge and another burst following the interval could force the tourists to follow-on.

No South African bowler has a higher economy rate than two in the innings and that tells the tale of this game. Ahmed and Ajmal will resume after the break, with both batsman on one.

Good move from Smith as he brings Steyn back on for a new spell after lunch.

WICKET! Ajmal (1) c De Villiers b Steyn

Steyn gets the ball to move away from Ajmal and Smith's decision is justified as De Villiers takes a superb catch.

Steyn is just too good for Junaid and the tail-ender survives a maiden. Great start for the Proteas after lunch.

Pakistan earn the first run of the session, with Sarfaz prodding the ball to cover for a single. It's the only blemish to the over from Philander.

WICKET! Sarfaz(1) c De Villiers b Steyn

Steyn has five wickets! Sarfaz nicks one behind and De Villiers once again takes the ball well behind the stumps. Pakistan look destined to follow-on.

Philander continues with the ball and despite a superb over, a boundary is taken from the final two balls when Rahat edges the ball to fine leg before lofting the ball over the vacant mid-off area.

WICKET! Rahat (1) c Du Plessis b Steyn

Rahat edges one towards the slips and du Plessis takes a decent catch at the second time of asking. Steyn ends with astonishing figures of 6-8 on a superb morning for South Africa.

Pakistan have set a new record today. That is their lowest ever Test match total and it's a performance which will surely ensure a defeat for the tourists. We're awaiting news on whether Smith will enforce the follow, which he surely should.

South Africa have chosen to not enforce the follow-on. I'd like to offer you an explanation but I'm not sure if I can. The bowlers have threatened all morning and are still pretty fresh, so a follow-on looked a good idea. The Proteas lead by 204 and are almost ready to begin their second innings.

Smith and Petersen are at the crease and Gul will open the bowling.

It's a good start from Gul as he completes a maiden but Petersen didn't look threatened in the over.

Junaid starts with a no ball but there is already signs of swing for the bowler. A beauty from Junaid comes back and beats the outside edge of Smith by an inch, superb bowling.

Petersen gets off strike with a push onto the off-side for a single before Smith finds the boundary rope with a whip off his pads for four. Gul strays onto the pads again but it's just a leg-bye this time. Solid start from the Proteas.

Junaid has looked dangerous early in the innings and Smith is happy to get off strike with a leg-bye to fine leg. Petersen plays and misses but the ball somehow manages to evade the stumps. It's great seam bowling but wickets are crucial for Pakistan.

Smith collects a couple of runs when he clips the ball through square leg early in Gul's over. The pace bowler hasn't been finding the same swing as the South Africans or Junaid.

Petersen plays a superb straight drive but Junaid does well to stop any runs with his foot. The next delivery deflects off the pad and rolls away for an easy leg-bye before Smith nudges one to square leg for a single. Petersen drives straight to mid-on but Rahat gifts two runs to the hosts with a poor and needless throw at the stumps. The right-hander finally picks the gap with his drive and superbly strikes four runs through extra cover.

Gul fails to get a hand on Smith's straight drive and the Proteas skipper reaches the boundary again. Smith then top edges the ball high into the air but it lands safely at fine leg, resulting in two runs. More poor fielding follows as an overthrow from Gul gives an extra single to Petersen.

Superb shot from Petersen as he leans on a full delivery to stroke the ball through mid-wicket for four. A block is played with soft hands later in the over and that allows Petersen to earn four more to fine leg.

Smith is brilliant at latching onto poor deliveries and he shows that skill when he cuts a short ball from new bowler Rahat to the boundary rope for four. Another boundary follows, thanks to a sweet drive through cover. Time for a drinks break.

Smith nudges one onto the off-side for a single and worryingly for Pakistan, batting is beginning to look very easy for the hosts. The swing seems to have faded a little and it's just one from the over.

Smith laughs off suggestions of caught behind at the start of Rahat's over and the replays show just how far away the ball was from the bat. It's a maiden from the Test rookie.

A good over is ruined when Junaid sends down a half-tracker, allowing Petersen to pull to fine leg for a single. South Africa look comfortable but you just feel they could have taken advantage of Pakistan's batting frailties.

Brilliant piece of timing from Petersen as he pulls through mid-wicket to bring up fifty for the hosts. Pakistan look a beaten side out in the field and the Proteas are piling on the misery.

Misbah decides it's time for spin and he introduces Hafeez into the attack. Can he inflict some damage before tea?

Smith defends well before rocking back to flick the ball through the legs of Azhar Ali at short leg for a single. Petersen works the ball to fine leg for another run and Smith adds one more to make it three from the over.

Smith gets off strike early in Rahat's over before Misbah does some great work at cover to stop a textbook Petersen drive. the game seems to have gone quiet, Pakistan are desperate for a breakthrough.

Smith struggles to find the gap against Hafeez until a misfield from Misbah allows the skipper to reach the boundary rope in front of square on the off-side. It's good from Hafeez but he isn't threatening in the same way he did in the first innings.

Petersen has looked in great touch so far and doesn't miss out on an opportunity to cut Rahat past point for four runs. The South African duo trade singles towards the end of the over. All too easy for the hosts.

Unusually, Smith looks a bit nervous when the ball pitches on leg from Hafeez. He adjusts his stance and whips the ball through mid-wicket to collect four, punishing the spinner. A slightly lofted shot follows but the result is the same, four past mid-on.

Ajmal comes into the attack for what should be the final over before tea. Petersen does well to negate the threat against the tricky spinner and it's a maiden.

Tea: Questions may have been asked when Smith decided against enforcing the follow-on but he and Petersen have gone most of the way to batting Pakistan out of the game. The lead is now 277 and there looks to be no way back for the tourists.

After deciding to bat again, South Africa probably won't declare until around lunch tomorrow. It's been a positive display from Smith and Petersen, damaging any slim hopes of a Pakistan recovery.

Steyn's devastating spell of fast bowling this morning showed his class. Pakistan had no reply for the fast bowler and his variations.

Misbah will be rallying his hopes during the break but what is there to say? If this Test is beyond them, then the tourists must make a statement in the time remaining to improve morale ahead of the next game.

Smith and Petersen are back out and Pakistan look ready for another session.

The session starts with a run as Smith pushes a single to mid-on. It's a decent over and Gul prevents a boundary by collecting the ball off his own bowling following another good drive from Petersen.

Ajmal continues his spell before the tea break. the spinner will always be dangerous with the ball in his hand but Smith shows his confidence by whipping the ball through the leg-side for four runs. Clear signs that Smith wants to put his foot down as he charges down the pitch to loft the ball over mid-wicket for six. That's the skipper's half-century and it's been a superb knock so far.

Wicket! Petersen (27) c Hafeez b Gul

Petersen's attempts to match his captain's tempo ends miserably as he miscues a pull shot straight into the air. Hafeez takes a good catch and Pakistan have their first wicket.

Amla is the new batsman and he treats us to a few of his trademark defensive strokes. Wicket maiden from Gul.

Smith manages to get off strike at the start of Ajmal's over with a thick inside edge. Amla is off the mark when he guides the ball past a sluggish Junaid at mid-on to pick up three runs. Big appeal from Ajmal for lbw but Smith gets an inside edge on the ball before sneaking a single.

Wicket! Smith (52) c Sarfraz b Gul

Smith won't reach three figures on this historic occasion as he feathers the ball to Sarfraz behind the stumps. Kallis in next.

Perfect shot from Kallis as he drives the ball past mid-off for four runs. Not a bad way to begin your innings.

Amla is happy to deal in singles early in his innings and he tucks Ajmal away for one on the leg-side. Three from the over and South Africa remain in full control despite those wickets.

Gul pleads for lbw when the ball strikes Kallis on the pads but that would have safely missed leg stump. A bouncer is well directed but Amla stays upright to pull the ball to fine leg for a single. Kallis steals the strike with a push to mid-on, Pakistan need plenty more from Gul.

This pair are content on knocking Ajmal around for singles and it will be interesting to see how long they wait before attacking the spinner.

Wicket! Kallis (7) c Shafiq b Ajmal

Kallis didn't wait long to attack but his innings comes to an end when he top edges the ball to Shafiq, who clings onto the catch at deep mid-wicket. AB de Villiers in next.

South Africa now lead by 303, so expect some more big shots.

De Villiers is eager to drive early in his innings and despite a couple of failed attempts, he's off the mark with a boundary straight down the ground.

Apart from the two expansive shots which resulted in wickets, the Proteas have played Ajmal well in this innings. The current duo out in the middle share three runs in the spinner's over.

Gorgeous batting from Amla as he stand tall to cut the ball through the off-side for four runs at the beginning of Junaid's new spell. A mistake outside off stump from Amla excites Junaid but there's no edge and a ball later the bowler has to watch the ball race away to the mid-wicket boundary. Brilliant batting from a player on top of his game.

Good piece of improvisation from de Villiers as he turns his bat to guide the ball past Sarfraz for four. The same batsman then takes a walk down the pitch to drive the ball powerfully to the straight boundary.

De Villiers pushes the ball onto the off-side, reacting well to rush a single. Amla adds another run through cover before de Villiers nudges the ball past mid-wicket to make it three from the over.

Good cricket from the South African pair as they work the ball around well to earn four runs from Ajmal's over.

Both players are confidently rotating the strike and they help themselves to six runs against Junaid. Pakistan look to have given up the fight out in the field.

De Villiers nudges the ball away for a single, bringing Amla on strike and he dances down the track to launch the ball over Ajmal's head for four. A loopy delivery is then dispatched to the boundary rope on the off-side to leave Ajmal with a frustrated look on his face.

Much better bowling from Junaid and a no ball is the only poor moment in a very good over. It's time for another drinks break as we enter the final hour of the day.

Hafeez returns to the attack for a new spell but he's met with a superb reverse sweep for four from de Villiers. Two singles follow and it's all very easy for the hosts.

Amla walks across his stumps to flick the ball onto the leg-side for a single. A no ball comes midway through the over before de Villiers adds another single with a nudge through mid-wicket.

Good running from this pair when De Villiers reverse sweeps to third man to collect three. Three more are added by Amla to square leg before he watches his partner crunch a cover drive through cover for four. One more single makes it 11 runs from the over.

Rahat returns for a new spell and is immediately taken for a single by De Villiers. It's a good over and Amla can only add one more to the total. Pakistan look ready for stumps now.

Amla pushes Ajmal away for one and De Villiers gives the strike back to his partner with a prod to long-on. Two more singles are rushed towards the end of the over, easy pickings for South Africa.

There is some rain expected in the next couple of day so we could see an overnight declaration from Smith.

These two are very good between the wickets and manage to earn six runs from Rahat's over with their pace. Quite simply, the runs are coming too easily. South Africa are proving that you can bat on this pitch.

Two runs are taken early in Junaid's over and De Villiers moves to within one of a half century with a drive to deep cover.

Well, De Villiers is given a big lifeline. Ajmal's lbw appeal is given out but a review is taken by the batsman. Hot spot doesn't show an inside edge but Billy Bowden does reverse his decision. That's a big slice of luck and he takes advantage by reaching his half century with a push down the ground.

Pakistan continue to trudge towards the end of play, with Junaid conceding five runs from his over.

Good response from Ajmal following that close call and Pakistan almost make a breakthrough. A lazy piece of running from De Villiers almost results in his demise, with a review saving him from being run out.

Amla almost spoils his hard work with a wild swing outside off stump. There's no edge and he resorts back to his normal ways, taking just a single from the over.

The Proteas are just cruising to stumps now, with the duo out in the middle trading singles from Ajmal's over.

De Villiers drives a half volley powerfully for a single to take the lead past 400. Amla adds another with a push through mid-wicket before De Villiers sends a wayward delivery to the fine leg boundary for four.

Ajamal has performed solidly, without really threatening too much. Three runs are scored in the over, this partnership is now worth 105.

Younus Khan is on for a short bowl before stumps but Amla looks intent on being dismissed by the part-timer for the second time in the game. He watches a maiden and we have one over left today.

Close of play: South Africa safely negotiate the final over of the day, with Amla reaching his half century thanks to an outside edge for two. Another great knock from a truly outstanding batsman.
