The Omega Pharma-Quick Step rider, who clinched the win just by a fraction of a wheel, initially thought that Sagan had won the stage and went to congratulate him while crossing the finish line.

However, a photo finish proved that Trentin took the honour, while Tony Gallopin and Tom Dumoulin came in third and fourth respectively.

Team Sky's Richie Porter secured a comfortable finish after moving to the front of the pack with 1km left to go in the stage, which began in Epernay and ended in Nancy.

Astana rider Vincenzo Nibali keeps the yellow jersey after stage seven.
