Dexter showrunner Clyde Phillips promises that the show's revival will be an "opportunity" to rewrite the much-maligned finale.

New Dexter showrunner Clyde Phillips has said that the forthcoming revival will be a chance to "write a second finale" to the saga.

Earlier this week US network Showtime announced that the show will return next year for a 10-episode miniseries, with Michael C Hall reprising his role as the titular serial killer eight years after the original run concluded.

The original Dexter finale came in for heavy criticism for what was generally perceived to be an underwhelming ending, which saw Dexter finish off his braindead sister then apparently die himself in a boating accident before re-emerging with a new identity as a lumberjack.

"We want this to not be Dexter season nine," Phillips told The Hollywood Reporter of the show's comeback.

"Ten years, or however many years, have passed by the time this will air, and the show will reflect that time passage. So far as the ending of the show, this will have no resemblance to how the original finale was.

"It's a great opportunity to write a second finale.... this is an opportunity to make that right."

Phillips has previously suggested that his version of the finale would have seen Dexter being executed while surrounded by the ghosts of his many victims.
