Prince Harry, Meghan Markle give up Royal patronages

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle decide not to continue as working members of the Royal Family.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, have decided not to continue as working members of the Royal family, Buckingham Palace has confirmed.

The pair stepped down as senior Royals last March, citing press intrusion and a desire to become financially independent, before relocating to California and launching a career in the entertainment industry.

During that time they have signed lucrative contracts with Netflix and Spotify, and now, with a one-year review of their Royal status approaching, they have taken the decision to step back fully.

As a result, Harry will be required to resign from a host of appointments and patronages - including patron of the Rugby Football Union, captain general of the Royal Marines and president of The Queen's Commonwealth Trust - while Markle will surrender her status as patron of the Royal National Theatre and vice-president of The Queen's Commonwealth Trust.

In a statement, Buckingham Palace said: "The Queen has written confirming that in stepping away from the work of the Royal Family it is not possible to continue with the responsibilities and duties that come with a life of public service.

"While all are saddened by their decision, the Duke and Duchess remain much loved members of the family."

A spokesman for the couple said: "As evidenced by their work over the past year, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex remain committed to their duty and service to the UK and around the world, and have offered their continued support to the organisations they have represented regardless of official role.

"We can all live a life of service. Service is universal."

Earlier this week it was revealed that the Sussexes have agreed to give a primetime US TV interview to Oprah Winfrey.
