Argentina, Paraguay and Uruguay plan joint bid for 2030 World Cup

The presidents of Argentina, Paraguay and Uruguay announce their intention to make a joint bid for the 2030 World Cup.

The presidents of Argentina, Paraguay and Uruguay have announced their intention to make a joint bid for the 2030 World Cup.

The plan was announced in Buenos Aires on Wednesday, although the bidding process for the centenary tournament will not begin for several more years.

Argentina and Uruguay signalled their intention to launch a joint bid in July, with Paraguay's addition strengthening their case.

"If they give us a chance, we're going to be great hosts," Argentine President Mauricio Macri said during the announcement at the presidential palace in the nation's capital.

"We're going to organise a great World Cup because there's plenty of soccer passion in this region of the world."

China reportedly also has an interest in bidding to host the 2030 edition, while European nations will once again be eligible under FIFA's rotating system.
