Arsene Wenger offers a pessimistic response when asked about the extent of the ankle injury sustained by Mohamed Elneny against West Ham United.

Arsene Wenger has revealed that Arsenal are awaiting the result of scans on the ankle injury sustained by Mohamed Elneny in Sunday's 4-1 win over West Ham United.

The Egypt international was visibly upset as he was stretchered off the Emirates Stadium field during the closing stages of the first half following a challenge with Mark Noble.

Arsenal's medical department have ruled out any serious damage, with initial fears that he could have broken a bone in his ankle, but Wenger is pessimistic about the extent of the layoff.

"Unfortunately it doesn't look too good," he told reporters at his post-match press conference. "He has an X-ray, but I don't know how bad it is. But it doesn't look too good."

Elneny's form this season saw him rewarded with a new long-term contract last month, taking him through until the summer of 2022.
