Former Arsenal attacker Paul Merson insists that the Gunners do not have a chance of picking up a positive result in Sunday's trip to Manchester United.

Former Arsenal attacker Paul Merson has expressed his doubts of the Gunners picking up a positive result in Sunday's trip to Manchester United in the Premier League.

The match will mark Arsene Wenger's final visit to Old Trafford as Arsenal boss, and the Frenchman is expected to make wholesale changes following Thursday's 1-1 draw with Atletico Madrid in the first leg of their Europa League semi-final.

The Gunners will take on Atletico in the second leg in Madrid next Thursday, and Merson has claimed that an understrength team will find it difficult to compete against Jose Mourinho's side.

"Arsenal have got no choice but to rest players at Old Trafford. They can't get in the top four so the Europa League is the priority and their only route into the Champions League next season," Merson told Sky Sports News.

"I cannot begin to think who will start against United because they have to rest, so it's a good time to play Arsenal. It's a shame for Arsene Wenger that this game comes in between the Atletico Madrid games, but winning the Europa League would make up for defeat on his last trip to Old Trafford."

Arsenal have already lost 11 of their 34 Premier League matches during the 2017-18 campaign, while they have taken just 13 points from their 16 league fixtures on the road.
