Patrick Vieira questions whether his former club Arsenal lack the mettle needed to win trophies.

Patrick Vieira has questioned whether his former club Arsenal lack the mettle needed to win trophies.

The French World Cup winner, who made over 400 appearances for the Gunners between 1996 and 2005, was part of an Arsenal side known as much for their disciplinary record as silverware.

"Since I left Arsenal, there are new players, a new generation and maybe a new philosophy because Arsenal play better football than we used to do in my time," he said.

"But our team was more physical and responded better to the English game. There is a big difference between the Arsenal team now and the one I played in."

The 35-year-old called time on his playing career after a year with Manchester City but has stayed on at the club as a coaching ambassador.

Arsenal have gone six years without a trophy after Vieira scored the winning penalty against Manchester United in the 2005 FA Cup final.
