Ian Wright slams "embarrassing" Arsenal after Karim Benzema pursuit

Ian Wright hits out at former club Arsenal for the way in which they went about their pursuit of Real Madrid marksman Karim Benzema.

Arsenal legend Ian Wright has slammed his former club's "embarrassing" pursuit of Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema during the summer.

The Gunners were linked with a £50m move for the Frenchman for much of the close season, but a deal failed to materialise, before he pledged his commitment to Real.

"I thought the Benzema situation was embarrassing in the way they pursued it," Wright, Arsenal's second highest goalscorer of all time, told BT Sport.

"Trying to get a player like that, straight off the bat you have to find out if they're interested in coming. If they're interested, you pursue it.

"I thought [the way] they dealt with it was pretty bad, and the way he mugged Arsenal off on Twitter by saying Madrid is his home wasn't great."

Arsenal, who were also linked to Paris Saint-Germain ace Edinson Cavani in the final days of the summer transfer window, lost 2-1 at Dinamo Zagreb in their Champions League opener on Wednesday.
