Fran Merida says that Alex Song can "contribute much" to the Barcelona team should he complete a move from Arsenal.

Former Arsenal youth player Fran Merida has backed Alex Song to succeed at Barcelona should he make the move from North London.

Reports have suggested that Catalan officials were in the country yesterday to finalise a £15m deal for the 24-year-old.

Cameroon international teammate Carlos Kameni also confirmed that Song wants a move to the Nou Camp.

Merida, who played for the Gunners between 2005 and 2010, said that the midfielder is a perfect fit for Barcelona.

"I think he is player who can contribute much to Barcelona because I think is very good player, and technically important," said Merida.

"He has the physical characteristics and is not without quality. He is a guy who is always cheerful, always smiling, very playful and a very good person."

Song joined Arsenal from Bastia in 2005.
