Roy Keane: 'I don't want to replace Paul Lambert'

Aston Villa assistant manager Roy Keane insists that he has not taken up the post in a bid to replace incumbent boss Paul Lambert.

Roy Keane has insisted that he is not planning to replace Paul Lambert as Aston Villa manager after being appointed as his assistant.

The former Manchester United midfielder will split his time between his new post at Villa Park and continuing his assistant manager role with the Republic of Ireland.

"I'm not here to take Paul's job. Absolutely," Sky Sports News quotes the 42-year-old as saying.

"I'm not promising any miracles but if I didn't think I could bring anything to the party, I wouldn't have signed.

"It's been a tough few years for Villa but a lot of big clubs have had difficult spells before. I believe we are capable of showing an improvement on the last couple of years. Let's wait and see."

Keane has previously managed Sunderland and Ipswich Town.
