Enrique Cerezo: 'Jackson Martinez had no luck at Atletico Madrid'

Atletico Madrid boss Enrique Cerezo admits that his club could not financially afford to turn down Guangzhou Evergrande's offer for Jackson Martinez in January.

Atletico Madrid boss Enrique Cerezo has claimed that Jackson Martinez 'did not have any luck' during his short career in Spain.

The Colombian joined Atletico from Porto last summer, but struggled to settle in Madrid and was sold on to Guangzhou Evergrande in the January transfer window.

Cerezo has admitted that his club could not refuse the offer from China, which is believed to have been in the region of £31m.

"He's a great player but he didn't have any luck here. The change will do him good, he didn't rise to the circumstances here. We received the offer, told the player, studied it, and it was the best thing for all parties," Cerezo told El Laguero.

The 29-year-old, who is believed to have signed a four-year deal with Guangzhou, only scored twice in 15 league games for Atletico.
