Championship Brighton & Hove Albion knock Premier League Newcastle United out of the FA Cup courtesy of an own goal from Mike Williamson.

An own goal from Mike Williamson allowed Championship side Brighton & Hove Albion to knock Newcastle United out of the FA Cup this evening.

Premier League Newcastle created the better of the chances in the first half but on both occasions Leon Best failed to find the target when well placed.

Republic of Ireland international Best then shot straight at Brighton goalkeeper Peter Brezovan after the break, while the Czech Republic stopper was alert to deny Shola Ameobi.

Craig Mackail-Smith had Brighton's first meaningful effort on goal but his effort was parried by Tim Krul.

The Dutch keeper could do little to prevent his side falling behind 14 minutes from time though. Will Buckley's cross from the left deflected off Magpies defender Williamson and the ball deceived Krul on its way into the net.

Newcastle pushed for an equaliser in attempt to force a replay during the time remaining but their search was unsuccessful.
