Preview: Haiti vs. Canada - prediction, team news, lineups

Sports Mole previews Saturday's World Cup Qualifying - North Central America clash between Haiti and Canada, including predictions, team news and possible lineups.

Canada travel to Port-au-Prince this week for the first leg of their 2022 World Cup qualifying second round match against Haiti at the Stade Sylvio Cator.

Clear favourites to win this tie, Canada will be expecting to pick up a win as they look to bolster their hopes of qualification.

Match preview

Canada come into this hugely significant tie on the back of two impressive qualifiers against Aruba and Suriname in which they scored 11 goals and conceded none.

Against Aruba, John Herdman's men won 7-0, with Lucas Cavallini, Junior Hoilett and Alphonso Davies all shining for the Canucks.

In their 4-0 over Suriname, Davies managed to bag another goal while compatriot Jonathan David scored a hat-trick to seal the tie.

Flying high at the moment, Canada will no doubt look to bring their top form into this first leg.

However, the Canucks face stiff opposition in the form of Haiti, who won Group E with three back-to-back wins against Nicaragua, Belize and the Turks and Caicos Islands.

Following their win over Belize back in March, Haiti rounded off a week in which they beat the Turks and Caicos Islands with a fiery 1-0 win against Nicaragua that saw two red cards.

Les Grenadiers must now find a way past Canada if they are to reach their first World Cup since 1974, their first and only appearance at a World Cup.

Haiti have history on their side for this tie, with Jean-Jacques Pierre's men having beaten the Canucks 3-2 back in the 2019 Gold Cup.

Lille star David is likely to lead the line again this week after his stellar performance, but Cavallini could line up alongside his countryman.

Davies is also expected to start, despite the fact that he was substituted off during that game against Suriname.

Haiti will be without Mikael Cantave, who was sent off against Nicaragua in the 88th minute.

Goalscorer Derrick Etienne is expected to start again for the national team in this tie.

Haiti possible starting lineup:
Placide; Simonsen, Lafrance, Ade, Lambese, Christian; Alceus, Gerrard, Nazon; Etienne, Deedson

Canada possible starting lineup:
Borjan; Laryea, Kennedy, Henry, Jonston; Eustaquio, Piette, Osorio; Davies, Cavallini, David

We say: Haiti 1-3 Canada

Haiti have proven themselves to be a decent side during the campaign, but victory against Canada may be asking too much of Les Grenadiers. It is fair to say that Canada have come a long way since their last encounter in 2019, and they have the firepower to prove it.
