Gary Cahill "disappointed" by Champions League debut

Gary Cahill rues the defensive errors against Napoli on a "low night" for the Chelsea defender.

Chelsea defender Gary Cahill has admitted that his debut in the Champions League was a night to forget.

The former Premier League champions stumbled to a 3-1 defeat at the hands of Napoli, despite taking the lead through Juan Mata.

"I'm ridiculously disappointed," said Cahill. "Disappointed with the result, the night, the Champions League debut. So it was a pretty low night for myself, actually.

"It started off brilliantly. We were frustrating them early doors, they made a mistake and we got the goal. For some reason, it seemed really open after that instead of really solid.

"We should have shut the door, made everything really compact and gone in at half-time 1-0 up, but it wasn't to be. I think we were too easily cut open."

The Blues face an uphill struggle to reach the quarter-finals of the elite competition with the return leg at Stamford Bridge next month.
