Chelsea midfielder Mason Mount feared long-term ankle injury

Chelsea midfielder Mason Mount admits that he feared that he had sustained a long-term ankle injury against Valencia last week.

Chelsea midfielder Mason Mount has acknowledged that he feared a lengthy spell on the sidelines after suffering an ankle injury against Valencia last week.

During the early stages of Tuesday's Champions League fixture, Mount was on the receiving end of a strong challenge from Francis Coquelin, which subsequently led to his withdrawal.

While Mount came through the full 90 minutes against Liverpool five days later, the England international admits that he did not feel positive about the issue after heading back to the changing rooms.

The academy graduate is quoted by The Telegraph as saying: "As soon as I did it, in my head I thought it would be a long-term injury. We iced it and we let it calm down a bit. Then we realised it wasn't as bad as I first thought.

"The next day I was kind of jogging on it a little bit. Then I knew there was a chance of being involved. Obviously, there was swelling and there is still swelling there now, but it is solid.

"It felt good when I trained the day before the game, so I was pretty positive leading up to the game that I could be involved."

Despite featuring against Liverpool, Mount may be rested when the West Londoners take on Grimsby Town in the EFL Cup on Wednesday night.
