Chelsea are moving closer to a new stadium as they bid to buy back parts of the ground owned by the fans.

Chelsea have moved closer to building a new stadium after bidding to buy back parts of current home Stamford Bridge.

Some parts of the ground are currently owned by the Chelsea Pitch Owners, a group formed in 1993 to prevent the ground being bought by property developers.

Roman Abramovich's takeover of the club means this threat no longer exists and the Chelsea board are hoping to reacquire full ownership of the stadium.

Much like London rivals Tottenham, the Blues are looking for a new home so they can compete financially with the likes of Manchester City, Manchester United and Arsenal.

It is unclear yet as to whether the club will relocate to a different site or attempt to redevelop the current stadium.

Chelsea have played at Stamford Bridge since the club was founded in 1905.
