England manager Roy Hodgson admits that his squad have had their dreams shattered by yesterday's defeat to Italy on penalties.

Roy Hodgson has revealed that yesterday's loss to Italy on penalties has left his England squad with shattered dreams.

Despite being dominated for large parts of the quarter-final in Kiev, the Three Lions managed to take Italy all the way to a shootout, which ended 4-2 in the Azzurri's favour.

Reflecting on his side's campaign in Poland and the Ukraine, Hodgson believes that there are still positives to take from the tournament.

"I think that we've done well to come through the tournament without losing a match in normal time. It's always sad to lose a match on penalties," he told reporters this afternoon.

"We are still so disappointed at not going through to the semi-finals. We wanted it so badly.

"But when I look back I don't think I will be too disappointed about our performances and the way that we have behaved."

Hodgson and his squad will return home later today.
