England captain Wayne Rooney has heaped praise on Fabian Delph following the midfielder's performance against Switzerland on Monday night.
The Aston Villa man made an overzealous start to the match, putting in two poor challenges and earning a yellow card within 10 minutes, but he soon calmed down and impressed on his full debut for his country.
The 24-year-old grew into the game as it progressed, and Rooney believes that he looked at home on the international stage despite only making his debut last week against Norway.
"He was brilliant. His energy, he took the ball. Early on he had to be a bit careful," Rooney told reporters.
"The referee said to me at half time to have a word with him, but I think he knew anyway. I spoke to him and told him just to be careful because I think one more and he would have probably been off.
"But he played really well, took the ball, played with confidence and showed what a top player he is."
Danny Welbeck scored twice for England as they picked up a valuable 2-0 win in Basel.
