Roy Hodgson: 'I would quit if fans turned against me'

England boss Roy Hodgson admits that he would leave his role in the event of the supporters turning against him if his side performed poorly at European Championships.

Roy Hodgson has conceded that he would leave his position as England manager if the supporters turned on him after the European Championships next year.

The 67-year-old oversaw the Three Lions' worst campaign at a World Cup since 1958 last summer when his side failed to win a single match at the competition in Brazil.

England have responded with an excellent start in their qualifying campaign for Euro 2016 by winning all five of their matches.

However, Hodgson has admitted that his stay as boss could come to an end with another poor performance at a major tournament next year.

He told reporters: "It's tempting to think that one could stay longer, but it has got to be wanted, first by the FA, and it has to be wanted by the English people.

"Sven [Goran Eriksson] and Fabio [Capello] were not that unpopular going into the tournament, but they come out of the tournament and everyone is saying 'oh god, we don't want the next two years [with them]'.

"I don't want that at 68 or 69 years of age."

England are next in action against the Republic of Ireland next week in a friendly match.
